“WVI helped with my rent, electric bill, car payment, cell phone bill and money so I could get my prescriptions and gas! If it wasn’t for Ginger and WVI and all the help they gave to me, to help me get back on track I would be homeless with three children. I would still be my mental medication doing God knows what to try to survive.

God works in mysterious ways and he sent me Ginger Miller and WVI, and for that I am forever in their debt. I just hope one day I can return the favor.”– Melissa Carey

Melissa Carey: Operation Safety Net Lightened My Load

I am a disabled Army veteran out of Minnesota. I have three children, and I am unable to work because of my service connected disability. I have been battling the VA for almost a year on two of my claims for unemployment and temporary 100% disability for recent back surgery I had. Living off of SS & VA benefits alone was extremely hard.

In April my family fell on extremely hard times. My husband and I separated and it wasn’t pretty. I am not one to ask for help, but it got so bad that I we were at risk of losing our housing. I couldn’t pay my bills or even get my medications.

Everything seemed to be spiraling out of my control.

My trucks breaks went out, my car payment was late and I got a disconnect notice for my electric and my phone. The stress and fear of being homeless coupled with not knowing where my kids’ next meal was going to come from was overwhelming to say the least.

My PTSD and anxiety attacks were getting worse and worse. I contacted the VA to see if they could expedite my claims due to financial hardship, only to be told they were so backed up on claims they didn’t know when mine would get done.

I was lost…

I just happened to come across a Facebook post from the Wounded Warrior Project talking about grants. (I am an Alumni with the WWP) so I decided it wouldn’t hurt to ask a question or two to see if it was something my family could use. Turns out the grants were for nonprofit groups supporting veterans not individual grants.

I didn’t know what else to do or where else to turn! That’s when Ginger Miller from the WVI just happened to see my comment and reached out to me to help my family and I! I already had liked and followed the WVI Facebook page but never thought to look there for help.

When Ginger reached out to me it felt like God himself intervened! I mean what are the odds that Ginger would have seen my comment (out of hundreds) on a completely different Facebook page and know it was me!!

I just knew this was a blessing! Ginger instantly got in touch with me and got the ball rolling on getting my family and I the help we desperately needed through Operation Safety Net!

WVI helped with my rent, electric bill, car payment, cell phone bill and money so I could get my prescriptions and gas! If it wasn’t for Ginger and WVI and all the help they gave to me, to help me get back on track I would be homeless with three children. I would still be my mental medication doing God knows what to try to survive.
